The
classic English garden began at the beginning of the 18th Century. It was
essentially a park consisting of rolling green grassy fields with clumps of
trees and one or more bodies of water. Structures in the classic Greek
style and Gothic ruins were often included. There was an influence by the
gardens of the Far East because of the great extent of the British Empire by
that time. The style of the English garden subsequently became popular
throughout Europe and has remained the prototype of gardens and parks
throughout the Western world to this day.
